Wessel Oosthuizen has Bachelor of Science degrees in Human Kinetics
and Education as well as in Physical Therapy from the University
of Stellenbosch in South Africa. He received a postgraduate certification
in orthopedic manual therapy from the Maitland Institute of America and has
done a wide variety of postgraduate training courses in advanced
treatment methods such as the McKenzie and Mulligan concepts,
dry needling and advanced myofascial release techniques.
Wessel has extensive work experience in orthopedics and sports-injuries,
having worked in these fields in South Africa, Namibia, Great
Britain and New York City, before moving to Honolulu. He has worked
with competitive athletes in a variety of sports including gymnastics,
marathon running, swimming and golf, besides being the team physical
therapist for rugby teams in South Africa. In Manhattan, Wessel
managed a busy and successful physical therapy clinic from 1998
to 2003, during which time he was also a clinical instructor for
manual therapy courses.
Wessel frequently incorporates video biofeedback into his treatments.
He finds this helpful as an educational tool for patients, in addition to
being useful for running and sports-motion analysis. He feels strongly about
a multi-disciplinary team approach in patient care. Therefore, as a founding
member of Hands-On Physical Therapy, Wessel believes that building strong
relationships with medical professionals who share the core values of Hands-On,
is essential in a challenging medical care system.
He enjoys surfing, distance running, photography and fishing.
