Marit Johnson graduated with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and
Technology in Rapid City, SD in 1996 and worked in civil engineering consulting for 3 years before switching careers
into the physical therapy field. A love of anatomy and a background in engineering fit seamlessly with physical
therapy and Marit graduated from the University of South Dakota, Vermillion , SD in 2002 with a master’s degree in
physical therapy. After graduating, she worked in Sioux Falls, SD for 6 years before moving to Hawaii. Five of these
years were with Sanford USD Medical Center where she helped lead the development of the physical therapy component
for Sanford’s Chronic Pain program, taking on difficult orthopedic and sports medicine cases.
Marit continues to gain valuable experience in the challenging orthopedic and sports medicine cases as well as
women’s health issues as her career progresses. Her own personal experiences with sports-related pelvic injuries have
helped build her orthopedic knowledge of the pelvic ring in combination with pelvic floor and lower extremity
rehabilitation to help others return to sport or activities successfully.
Marit is a member of the International Academy of Orthopedic Medicine-US and is currently studying for her
certification in orthopedic manual therapy through them. She is also a member of the Orthopedic Section in the
American Physical Therapy Association.
Marit enjoys triathlons, surfing, water sports, mountain biking, and hiking and moved to Hawaii to do them
year-around. She also enjoys yoga, Pilates and team sports with most of her experience being in basketball and
track & field at high school and college levels.
